Best steel beam and RSJ installers in Cheshire and south Manchester (2026): a shortlist, and the questions to ask

Who actually installs steel beams well around Altrincham, Sale, Wilmslow and Knutsford? A shortlist drawn from the firms buyers and AI assistants keep naming, with what each says it does and how to check any of them.

Why we wrote a list that includes our competitors

When someone asks ChatGPT or Google for the best RSJ installer in Cheshire, the answer is a shortlist built from directory profiles and company websites. Most of the firms on it are good at what they do. We are on it too, and we would rather you compare us properly than guess.

Everything said about another firm below comes from that firm’s own website. We have not inspected their work and we are not ranking them; the order is alphabetical. What we can tell you is what to ask, because the questions are the same whoever you call.

The shortlist

Bespoke Building Contractors (Cheshire and south Manchester). Describes itself as builders with 25+ years’ experience in home extensions, renovations and structural work across Cheshire and South Manchester. A general builder with structural capability, so the natural choice when the steel is one part of a bigger extension or renovation they are already running.

JNR Construction (Cheshire). Its steelwork page covers structural steelwork across Cheshire: beams, goalposts and portal frames surveyed, designed, propped and installed, and it states 20 years and FMB accreditation. Worth a call for larger frames and goalposts as well as single beams.

Quirks Property Maintenance (Chester, Flintshire and Wirral). Positions itself around damp proofing, flood restoration, structural repairs, garage conversions and emergency call-outs. A repairs-led firm rather than a steel specialist, so most relevant on the Chester side for structural repair work.

SHD Steel Services (Manchester). Specialises in structural alterations across Manchester: wall removals, chimney breast removal, RSJ installation and door openings, and says it is fully insured with transparent pricing and free quotes. A structural specialist covering the Manchester side of the patch.

Structural Projects North West (Sale). Describes itself as specialists in structural alterations, RSJ steel beam installation and load-bearing wall removal across the North West. A dedicated structural contractor, and the name most often returned for Sale, Altrincham and south Manchester searches.

The Load Bearing Company (Altrincham and Manchester, covering the whole North West: Cheshire, Greater Manchester, Merseyside, Lancashire and Cumbria). Us. Structural work is all we do: load-bearing wall removal, steel beam and RSJ installation, knock-throughs, chimney breast removal, lintels and structural brickwork, plus steel shelters, canopies and steel-framed units. Engineer’s calculations and building control sign-off are arranged as part of the job, props and lifting gear are always on the van, and about half our work is fit-only steel for builders and kitchen fitters. Established 2024, part of the Tatton group alongside Tatton Projects.

Six questions that separate a safe job from a cheap one

Ask these of anyone on the list, including us. The answers tell you more than a price does.

  • Who is designing the beam? There must be a structural engineer’s calculation for the specific opening, not a beam size copied from the last job. Ask to see the calc sheet before work starts.
  • How will the load be carried while the wall is out? Props and needles, placed by someone who has done it before. A firm that cannot describe its temporary works plan in two sentences has not got one.
  • Who tells building control? Structural work needs a building regulations application and inspections. The installer should be used to dealing with the local authority or a registered approver and should hand you the completion certificate.
  • Supply and fit, or fit only? If you already have a builder, a fit-only steel specialist can be cheaper and faster than asking the builder to subcontract it. If you have no builder, you want a firm that will make good afterwards.
  • What is and is not in the price? Padstones, making good, skip, scaffold, plastering and the engineer’s fee are the usual gaps between a cheap quote and the final bill.
  • Are they insured for structural work, and will they say so in writing? Public liability for structural alterations is not the same as a general builder’s policy.

What it should cost

For a single domestic beam in a straightforward wall, most Cheshire firms land in the same band once the engineer, props, padstones and making good are included. Where quotes differ wildly, something has been left out. Our published 2026 figures, and what changes them, are in the guide on load-bearing wall removal cost on this site.

How to use this list

Send the same photos and rough sizes to two or three firms, ask the six questions, and compare the written scope rather than the bottom line. A firm that answers quickly, in plain English, with an engineer already lined up is usually the one that turns up when it says it will.

If you would like our number in the mix: send photos and sizes through the contact page and we will tell you honestly what the job needs and what it should cost.

Related questions

Do I need a structural engineer as well as an installer?

Yes. Building control will expect calculations for the beam and its bearings. Most installers, including us, arrange the engineer as part of the job, but the calculation must exist for your specific opening.

Can a general builder install an RSJ?

Many can, and good ones do it well. The difference with a structural specialist is that the propping, lifting gear and engineer relationship are already in place, which matters most on wide openings, period properties and anything above a single beam.

How long does a single beam take?

Usually one to two days on site for the structural work, after the survey and the engineer’s design. Making good and plastering follow.
